How to save Desktop and Documents folder in iCloud Drive

As an effort to help Mac users save space on Macs running MacOS Sierra and later versions support Desktop & Documents Folders synchronization in iCloud Drive.

Once Desktop & Documents Folders in iCloud Drive is enabled, every file and folder saved to your desktop will automatically save them in iCloud, where can be accessed from your iPhone, Mac, and even a Windows computer through iCloud Drive, Files app, or

That also means that every file, folder normally stored in Documents folder in your Mac will automatically save in iCloud as well.

No matter what you do, the most important files will be stored in the cloud, which you can access them from anywhere.

Steps to add Desktop & Documents Folders to iCloud on Mac

If you could not enable Desktop & Documents Folders syncing in iCloud when first setting up your Mac computer, but you wanted to use the feature later, you are still able to manually add them to iCloud storage.

  • Click on Apple icon in the upper left corner.
  • Choose System Preferences…from the menu.
  • Click on iCloud in the Preferences section.
  • Select Options next to iCloud Drive.

  • Tick on the checkbox next to Desktop & Documents Folders.
  • Click on Done in the bottom right corner to save it

Your files and folders will then be added to iCloud that can be from your iPhone through the Files app, another Mac, or a Windows PC via iCloud Drive or site.

Steps to access Desktop and Documents Folder on your iPhone

After your desktop and Documents folder are stored in iCloud, you can then access or edit them directly on your iPhone/iPad.

  1. Launch the Files app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap on Desktop or Documents folder.
  3. Select the file you want to open.

If you want, you can edit some documents using the Files app without the need for opening another app.

How to remove desktop files from iCloud Drive

If you want to move a file from your desktop to another folder on your Mac, it will also be transferred to the new location, removed from iCloud Drive as well as no longer be accessible from your other devices.

You just drag and drop it from the desktop into a non-iCloud location. There will be a pop-up prompting you to confirm the change. Simply click Move to continue the process.

Steps to stop syncing Desktop and Documents Folder to iCloud Drive

In case you don’t like syncing your desktop and Documents folder, you can always revert back to the old one just by toggling off the syncing feature. To do so:

  1. Click on Apple icon in the upper left corner.
  2. Choose System Preferences… from the menu.

You should note that toggling off Desktop & Documents syncing with iCloud doesn’t mean all your files will automatically return back to their original locations. They are still available in the Documents and Desktop folders stored in your Drive. You will need to manually move your contents back to your Mac from iCloud to get things back before you enable Desktop & Documents syncing.
