iPad 3 is delayed because of Retina displays

Initial plans for the iPad 3 to be released just after mid-2011 won’t take place as some of the main suppliers of displays for Apple tablet can not cope with the task.

Apple wants 9.7-inch LCD panel with resolution of 2048×1536 pixels, which will require greater backlight, since a number of LED will be sufficient to deliver the performance required by Apple. The integration of larger backlight, however, requires more space, and the California company will certainly want to release even more slim tablet rather than a thicker one.

Sharp, however, seems to have found a way to solve the problem, which led to Apple investing $1 billion in the Japanese company to secure its future screens for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices.
