Yesterday, Apple officially debuted three new 2018 iPhone models, but it’s quite difficult to tell them apart anymore. The old traditional design with the home button and the thick bezels are gone, instead, all three new models come with iPhone X styling.
If you are getting a headache on deciding which variant to purchase, I see your indecision. That’s why I’d like to share with you an instruction to help you choose the best model for your needs.
iPhone XR, Xs, and Xs Max: Comparison
Dimensions
All three new 2018 iPhones also inherits iPhone X’s “all-screen” design when the superfluous space is dispensed above and below the screen and display is pushed to the edges. This means, there will be a notch at the top containing the camera and other sensors for reducing the physical size. Here are the dimensions of three new phones.
- iPhone XR’s dimensions: 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3mm
- iPhone Xs’s dimensions: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm
- iPhone Xs Max’s dimensions: 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7mm
The last year iPhone 8 Plus is measured at 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5mm, so you can even the biggest iPhone XS Max with a 6.5-inch display is not bigger than the previous generation, while it has more space on the screen.
Display
Similar to iPhone X, the iPhone Xs still features the same 5.8-inch display, but Apple has added the new model with a 6.5-inch display. Both of those screens are made of new OLED panel manufactured by Samsung for the most accurate color, HDR, and deep blacks.
At a lower segment, there is an entirely new phone, called the iPhone XR, which flaunts a 6.1-inch LCD display, which is called Liquid Retina by Apple. It’s slightly larger than the 5.8-inch screen on iPhone Xs. Here’s the display configuration of three new models.
- iPhone Xs: a 5.8-inch OLED display, 2436×1125, 458 ppi
- iPhone Xs Max: a 6.5-inch OLED display, 2688×1242, 458 ppi
- iPhone XR: a 6.1-inch LCD display, 1792×828, 326 ppi
While the resolution of the iPhone XR is much lower than the Xs and Xs Max, it’s not bad when looking at it. According to a definition of Apple, Retina quality is defined as anything with a pixel density above 300ppi, so you won’t see any jagged edges. All displays on three new iPhones are integrated with the True Tone technology.
Performance
These trio phones are powered by the latest A12 Bionic processor, which, according to Apple description, is “the smartest, fastest chipset in a smartphone.” The chipset is built on a new neural engine, which can perform five trillion operations just in a second for AR and camera advancements. The CPU and CPU on this new chip are also much faster and more efficient. Although the XS models have more RAM, the performance should be the same across the three phones.
Camera
Both iPhone Xs and Xs Max feature the same dual camera setup, while the iPhone XR is only equipped a single camera like the iPhone 8, iPhone 7 and older models.
iPhone Xs/Xs Max: A single12MP wide-angle (f/1.8) sensor and another 12MP telephoto cameras (f/2.4), dual OIS, 2x optical zoom
iPhone XR: A single12MP (f/1.8), OIS
When looking at configuration, you can see the camera on the iPhone Xs and Xs Max is much superior to the camera on iPhone XR, but all of them come with the same sensor. Despite not having a second camera, you can still capture photos in Portrait Mode with the help of advanced bokeh and Depth Control. Furthermore, there are also Portrait Lighting, Smart HDR, 4K video recording capacity and slow-motion video for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps.
All three 2018 iPhones sports the same front-facing camera- a 7MP TrueDepth sensor with f/2.2 aperture. It also comes with Portrait Mode, Portrait Lighting, and Smart HDR.
Storage
There were third storage options for the new iPhone lineup, but the iPhone XR comes with different options when compared to the two Xs models.
- iPhone Xs 7 Xs Max: 64GB/256GB/512GB
- iPhone XR: 64GB/128GB/256GB
The maximum storage of both iPhone Xs models is 512GB, the largest storage that Apple has ever offered in a phone. While the iPhone XR comes with the same 256GB that iPhone X, 8 Plus, iPhone 8 offered for the most high-end variant. However, I think most users don’t have any reason for much internal storage.
Biometrics
With the removal of the Home button, all three 2018 iPhones use Face ID for the unlock. Regarding Apple, the system has now been faster, and iOS 12 will also allow users to add a second face, which is great.
Charging
All the phones come with Qi wireless charging, but you need to spend money on a third-party pad. Hopelessly, all three phones are only shipped with the same 5W charger. So, if you want to fast charge your new iPhone, you’ll need to purchase a 30W charger (around $49) á well as a USB-C-to-Lightning cable ($19) for fast charging.
Colors
iPhone X only went on sale with black and silver colors. That’s why Apple has expanded its palette this year.
- iPhone Xs: Black, silver, gold color options
- iPhone Xs Max: Black, silver, gold color options
- iPhone XR: White, black, blue, coral, gold, yellow, red color options
Price
That might be what you are waiting for in this post: What do these three phones cost? Although none of them start as low price as the $699 of iPhone 8, there is a new iPhone for every budget, assuming you have money to grab a new one.
- iPhone Xs: $999-$1,149-$1,349
